FFI

And...here we go!

1. I'm going pick up that SLR and start practicing on taking great photos.

2. I am not into adventure and daring.

3. Perhaps today you can make it a point to wake up early and stop playing too much computer games.

4. I tend to go with what I am used to, it seems I don't have a true adventurer’s spirit.

5. Compassion is something I feel that I lack.

6. I am the type who finish what I start, no matter how difficult.

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to watching TV because our cable has gone digital and ETC channel is finally back, tomorrow my plans include going to my baby's Pedia for his Annual flu shot and then dinner with my friends and Sunday, I want to hear mass and rest!

10 Things Every Driver Should Know

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

I know so little about cars and car maintenance that I say a little prayer every time I am behind the wheel.

...engine trouble, flat tire or being locked out are some things I hope never ever happens to me (especially if I am alone or alone with a kid!)

Here are 10 Things Every Driver Should Know:

Every driver should know how to change a flat tire. I generally have an idea how to change a tire. I've seen my Dad do it and I know if I try - I can do it. But that's the thing, I've never tried to change one myself. I am relying on the fact that someone's gonna come help. Bad driver =(( I know, I know...I'll practice on this one and if your a driver and don't know how to change a tire, I suggest you do the same.

Every driver should know when to Stop. If your ‘check engine’ light pops on, you can usually wait until you arrive at a safer place to stop (not on the highway or a shady part of town). If, however, your engine begins to smoke or it suddenly feels like you are driving over logs with your wheel jerking one way or the other, pull over ASAP.

Every driver should know when NOT to Stop. Think of your safety first. If someone bumps your fender in an isolated stretch of highway, do not pull over right away but rather motion for them to follow you to a well-lit, public place. Never isolate yourself on the side of an empty road with a stranger, even a cop. When I was a newbie driver, I shouldn't have stopped right away after our car's aircon started to have smoke, I should have waited to be in a safer neighborhood, our car turned out to be fine - but we weren't! We got mugged ='(( I lost my phone and jewelry. Arg. Lesson learned.

Every driver should know their driving limits. I am okay driving for let's say an hour to 2 hours max, after that I know I'd get dead tired. I've been driving for 2 years but I have never tried a long drive yet and I don't plan to start soon.

Every driver should know a
number of a roadside assistance club. You never know when you need your car towed or key duplicated. Most are open 24 hours a days/7 days a week and for your general safety, it is prudent you apply for membership.

Every driver should know NOT to text while driving. Well duh. Apart from wearing seatbelts - this is a no brainer. No texting, no phonecalls even.

Every driver should know their vehicle’s maintenance needs. Cars routinely need their oil changed, filters traded out, tires switched and alignment checked. Have your oil changed every 3000-5000 miles. Check tire pressure routinely.

Every driver should know how to check their tire pressure. ...in my case where I don't - I always have it checked whenever I gas up.

Every driver should know to stay alert and stay alive. If and when you feel drowsy, do everyone a favor and pull-over. Eat something. Take a power nap.

Every driver should know how to jump start their car. Carrying jumper cables in the trunk is always a good idea, even if you have a new car and battery. Memorize these steps, or write them down on a note you keep with your jumper cables: Attach red clamp to the positive terminal of the dead battery, and then clamp the other red end to the positive terminal of the live battery on a running car. Now attach one of the black clamps to the negative terminal of the good battery, and the other black clamp goes to an unpainted steel surface of the dead car in order to ground it. Now try and start the dead car. Remove the clamps in reverse order. Done!(Shilo Urban)

The Assignment

The Little Turtle
by: Ozzy

There was a little turtle
who lived in a box
it swam under the water
and it climbed on the rocks

it snapped at the mosquito
it snapped at the flea
it snapped at the minnow
and it snapped at me

it caught the mosquito
it caught the flea
it caught the minnow
but it did not catch me
ha! ha! ha! ha! ha!

The students were asked to familiarize with the poem. Ozzy didn't seem to have a problem memorizing it! Cool ^-^

What's your secret recipe?
I don't even cook, let alone have my own secret recipe.

Imagine you want to write a book. What's going to be in it and what is it going to be about?
Definitely NOT a cookbook! I would want it to be about hair, haircare, style tips and tricks =))

Name 5 things in your freezer.
Popsicle. Pork. Chicken Nuggets. Ice. Icecream

The Plan.

Starting today, I vow to stop drinking soda's. My weakness is one tall glass of ice cold soda..and we all know that those things are junk. They are mostly made up of sugar that isn't healthy at all. I've read somewhere that recent research reports from the United Kingdom say that the common preservative used in carbonated drinks can switch off essential parts of DNA, which may bring on premature aging and trigger diseases associated with old age.

Aside from being unhealthy - it isn't good for my "so-called" diet plan. I plan to lose 5-6 pounds before hubby comes home this December. Taking in apidexin might be the easier route but I won't resort to it. I will do it the way I know best, after-6 diet, less rice, no soda's and a bit of exercise =))

Hair Myths Busted!

Since I'm obsessed with hair, lemme indulge and share with you here an article I've read from shine.yahoo

Myth: Frequent trims make hair grow faster.

Truth: "Hair grows a half-inch per month, whether you cut it or not," says John Barrett, owner of the John Barrett Salon in New York City. Hair may grow slightly faster in the summer, but that has nothing to do with the stylist's scissors and everything to do with hormones, which do speed growth a little. One thing a trim will do: Eliminate split ends, making hair look better.

Myth: Stress can make your hair fall out.

Truth: Although your hair is falling out all the time, to the tune of 50 to 120 strands per day, it's possible that you may lose a few more strands when you're "catastrophically" stressed, meaning you have had a major life change such as a divorce, lost job, or surgery, says Gerome Litt, M.D., an assistant professor of dermatology at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland. "Other culprits are pregnancy or antibiotics. After a few weeks, it will almost certainly grow back."

Myth: Switching shampoos can make hair look healthier.

Truth: It may seem so, but experts scoff. "Hair can't tell the difference between brands or build up tolerance to any product," says London-based hair and scalp expert Philip Kingsley. "Your favorite shampoo will work the same every time you lather up, week after week, month after month." If you have very oily hair or favor a particularly sticky styling product that contains wax, it does pay to use a clarifying shampoo once every two weeks to wash away residue. Good Housekeeping's Beauty Department recommends Redken Hair Cleansing Cream and Neutrogena Anti-Residue Shampoo.

Myth: If you pluck out one gray hair, two or three will sprout in its place.

Truth: While this isn't true, plucking out those gray strands is a bad habit. You can damage the roots, causing infection or leaving a scar.

Myth: You can't make flat, fine hair look full of body.

Truth: Five minutes with a set of large hot rollers will add life to straight hair.

Myth: Rinsing with ice-cold water after a shampoo will give you shinier hair.

Truth: It might wake you up, but a dousing of cold water will have no effect on the shininess of your tresses.

Myth: Coloring your hair causes major damage.

Truth: Products today — both at home and in the salon — are gentle enough not to weaken hair. In fact, some contain extra conditioners that may leave hair more manageable than before. Although it's not necessary, "it can't hurt to consult a professional stylist the first time you do anything permanent to your hair or scalp," Kingsley counsels.

Myth: You should brush your hair 100 strokes every day

Truth: "Brush it only to style it, because brushing pulls hairs out of their follicles and possibly weakens individual strands," says Kingsley.

Myth: You can mend split ends with the right products

Truth: Once they're split, that's it. The only thing you can do then is cut them off. Celebrity stylist Jimmy Paul suggests making split ends less noticeable by applying a product containing silicone or beeswax. It will temporarily seal ends together, making hair softer and more manageable. Try: John Paul Mitchell Gloss Drops and John Barrett Bee Hold.

Myth: To get really clean hair, you must "lather, rinse, and repeat."

Truth: One thorough washing will do the trick.

Fresh Picks

I still haven't bought anything for Hubby and I have a few days left. This weekend, my bro-in-law will be flying back to Norway so I have to find something for Hubby soon. I have something in mind - IF I FIND ONE. If not then - well, I hope he'd appreciate the charger I got for his laptop (because I'm the one with paypal account).

Like I said, buying a gift for guys is really difficult. Too bad he doesn't need a new PC right now, I could have used the cyberpowerpc coupons to purchase one.

Other than gadgets (no budget for those='( ) what else is a good gift idea?

All That Glitters

Sunday, July 25, 2010

I rarely get to have time for myself.

But on the rare occasion that I do - I get bored. This is one of those times. I've been browsing the net for quite awhile now, spending most of my time facebook stalking when I cam across my friends blog about investing gold. Personally, I don't know anyone who has even tried to buy gold bullion. It's either people guy jewelry, a piece of land, a painting or luxury cars. Am I missing something here? Is buying gold, in coin or ingots the new "in" thing? Or has it been a trend for awhile its just me whose never heard? It has been said, "The beauty of a gold bar lies in its proven ability to diversify investments, protect wealth and preserve one’s purchasing power." That being said who doesn't want to preserve one's wealth?

It's time I become a gold digger.

Time For A Check

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Our car is due for its checkup anytime. I still have to find the time to do it. Now that I use the car daily to and from Joshua's school, I have to make sure it is in top shape. It's just that rains have been pouring lately and I'd hate to have to call a cab. So, I am looking for the perfect time and weather to bring the car to a shop. If I bring it, that would mean it would have to stay there for a day or 2 depending on the maintenance it needs.

I can't overlook this any longer though. I can feel the car needs oil change, its filters changed, tires need air, the wiper blade has to be changed and the wheels rotated and the car aligned. Speaking of cars, I've got to find an affordable cargo mat for our car. Our trunk's liner has ripped and you have to keep on rearranging it because it slides off. I had a problem when I had to put Joshua's cake in because I was scared the cake would slide on the trip home. I hope it doesn't cost too much though. Jacob's 1st birthday is coming up and although we don't plan a big celebration we'd still invite a few people for dinner or something like that.

Regrets, Everyone Has Them

I live my life with no regrets.

However, thinking about it some more...I realized there ARE some things in my life which I regret. Here's my top 5.

  1. I regret not learning to play a musical instrument. I love music and it's a shame I can't sing =P Maybe learning to play, a guitar perhaps is a great skill to have.
  2. Not sleeping early during school days and during afternoons. I could have used the inch or 2.
  3. I regret not taking care of my skin when I was younger, although it was a fun childhood I could have gone without the scrapes and scars.
  4. Not doing my best in school. I did well but I did not try to do my best.
  5. Staying out of the sun or at least wearing sunblock. I have age spots and wrinkles to show for it =((

My MIL recently gifted us with something unique that wouldn't depreciate.

Nope, it's not jewelry. It's a 1907 1-peso silver coin and it's in mint condition. Which brings me to the conclusion that my MIL is indeed one great investor. She is a businesswoman and she has properties. She knows where to put her money for it to flourish. Although their family is not exactly filthy rich, they have enough to live comfortably. Aside from that, they live simply even though they can well afford some luxuries. I was just thrilled with the idea of owning my very own silver coin. I wonder if my mother in law has gold coins stashed somewhere in there?

Speaking of coins, some of these rare coins can go up to $15,000, can you believe it? I just saw an episode of 90210 wherein Liam stole some coins from his stepdad's collection to fun his own Dad's business only for his real Dad to run away with the coins instead. I couldn't begin to imagine what kind of Father he was, asking his son to steal and just abandon him like that.

I am lucky to have very good parents and not to mention parent's in-law as well.

Life's A Gamble

Thursday, July 15, 2010

...my life has been blessed.

It's not perfect but it is blessed. Sometimes, I am scared to think that something tragic might happen to even things out (I hope not!). I guess it's also because I've never really been an "unhappy" person. I always try to look at the brighter side of things.

I am an optimist my nature.

So anyway, with all the blessings pouring in this year, I really want a solid investment not only for me but for my family as well. We never know what will happen next. Life's a gamble they often say. Sometimes were up and sometimes were down. It scared me to think that natural calamities have been hitting the world for a few months now. I want something I could turn to when currency fails and investing in gold comes to mind.

So, I urge you to buy gold coins!=) I will and I hope the gamble pays off.

Do It.

Monday, July 12, 2010

Last week was an expensive week for me!

I spent easily 5,000 on the kids medication and doctor's fee for their stye. Yeah, the expense was minimal as compared to some other families who suffer from more serious illness like cancer or even dengue. I am still thankful that their eye infection was not anything serious, I really really hope it won't even come back again. In fact, I really hope they won't get sick/hurt/ill/unwell/disordered/diseased/unhealthy again! But that's impossible so I'd settle for giving them the next best thing - insurance! I checked out North Carolina health insurance to get an idea on the prices and services offered. They even have dental coverage and so much more. Gotta get one of those. I suggest you do the same. :)

The 2 boys are keeping me insanely busy these days so adding 1 to the brood is crazy - not to mention utterly impossible since Hubby is 9,994km away! :((

My friend and I was on the phone for over 30 minutes to talk about - hair! Yeah...she's pretty confused what to do with he unmanageable hair and I was all too willing to indulge her and talk about what hairstyles would suit her hair type and face.

If I had all the time in the world, I'd go with her to the salon. I love going to salons, I love dressing up and getting all made up for a night out. Even though my 'night-outs' would mean just dinners I still make the effort to dress up because I enjoy it. In fact, I enjoy it so much that I've been thinking of enrolling in cosmetology school just like that one, the - Jacksonville Cosmetology School - to learn more about it. This way, I have another skill that may help me in the future when we decide to live in another country. For sure, I won't have the luxury of going to salons often if we migrate to lets say, Norway. Specialized services like having your hair and make up done would surely be expensive and since I enjoy it, why not i just do it myself? Right?

Home Remedies For A Sty

Wednesday, July 7, 2010

I should really be working right now. I've been away from my work desk for too long already; however I can't help read more and more about eye infection (caused by Staphylococcus bacteria) and some possible ways to steer clear from having them.

The good news is that they are not serious and easily treated with home remedies.

The bad news is that once you have them, you are prone to having them again and again. Story of Ozzy's life. He's had 4 sty's in a span for 1 month. I've developing wrinkles by the hour because of the stress I'm having lately (good thing my wrinkle cream works wonders). Anyway, 4 in a month = that's 1 sty per week! Once an old one pops and subsides, another one appears. To make matters worse, the little baby has just gotten 1 as well.=((

So here's some home remedies on how to treat a sty from howtoall.com:

  • Heat it
Hot compress will definitely help fix it. Just make sure you don't boil your entire eyelid as you do so! Muster as much warmth as you can handle and then use it to give a bit of warm loving through a soft and clean piece of cloth. Do this as frequently as you can throughout the day.

  • Baby it
Much as it is completely alien to have a bump on your eye, make sure you don't touch it or use your hands to further compound the damage. Even if you are tempted to do so, fight the urge to squeeze the sty out of its misery. It will make things worse. Hold the sty as you would treat a newborn baby: with utmost care.

  • Clear it
Steer clear of eye makeup or accessories near the eyelid. You may have to sacrifice your eye makeup for a season until the sty leaves your precious eyelid. If you don't take note of this vital advice, you might end up transferring the sty bacteria on your makeup applicators and end up having an eye sty for life!

  • Clean it
You can use a mild soap on cotton cloth to gently clean the root of your eyelashes to prevent the sty from taking over. It thrives in dirt, so eliminate as much dirt as you can in the soonest possible time.

  • Keep It Private
Eye sty loves company, much like misery. So make sure you isolate it. At times like these, it is perfectly fine to be selfish and not have to share things with other people. Keep your towels, eye makeup and eye makeup applicators to yourself. And your eyes will thank you for it.

  • Medicate it
Medication is practically the last resort, and requires the doctor's approval. After having exhausted all other natural techniques of eliminating that nasty eye sty and if it still persists in being devoted to your eyelashes, seek expert opinion on which perfect ointment should extinguish it in no time.

The Plot Thickens!

..well, for the drama that is in my life right now.

Remember Joshua stye? Well...it's not serious but it is an infection. So obviously we're going to treat it (10 days antibiotics, some nasal ointment and eye ointment at that!) as well as Shoti's. However, I've forgotten one thing!!! He's going to be a coin bearer this coming Saturday for a relative's wedding. O.M.G.

The motif is burgundy so his eye-area fits the theme...lol...jk...

Anyway, I've been applying hot compress to it and he absolutely hates it! So what I do is I wait for him to fall asleep before I put the hot compress in (15 mins). I really hope the swelling will subside by Saturday. I hate for him to be conscious about his eyes by the time he will walk down the isle. It's bad enough that he's shy as it is - having this stye will make it a lot harder for him to be confident. Speaking of eyes, I think I will be needing those eye wrinkle creams after all. After all the sleepless nights and stressful days; I need a ton! Lord help me. Arggg =(

Butoy Brothers

Going to have to bring both kids back to the pedia today.

...they both have sty's on their left eye. Ozzy is in the lower lid and Shoti is on the upper. Butoy brothers. Poor BB's. As of now, I only put eye ointment for both, I don't know if this is the best eye cream for a sty but its better than nothing. I have got to put a stop to this though, Ozzy's stye has been recurring for a month now. This is a first for Jacob, and I intend it to be the last - for both boys! I hope the Pedia has a better option, like higher dose of antibiotics perhaps?

I was trying to take Ozzy's picture earlier - he wouldn't let me!

What Are Styes and How To Treat Them

Tuesday, July 6, 2010

Such a bummer, the kids have sty.

Although its nothing serious but I can't figure out why Ozzy's sty keeps on recurring! Because of his sty, the baby got one too!!! =( The doctor said I should not be alarmed and that it's pretty common for kids to have these things but I can't help wonder if I'm doing something wrong somewhere why my kids have them. I have an eye ointment for them and Ozzy even took antibiotics for a week...hai time to visit the pedia again.

What Causes Styes?

info from wisegeek.com

Styes are caused by Staphylococcal bacteria. This type of bacteria can usually be found in the nasal passages and is easily passed to the eye. Staphylococcal is passed by rubbing the nose and then touching the eye area. The gland situated at the end of eyelid may then become infected.

Styes are not detrimental to the eyes or to eyesight. Pain will occur, followed by a swelling or redness. The eye area will also be tender to the touch. Some stye sufferers find that the whole eye area becomes swollen, while for others, only the infected area swells. The eye may also tend to water and become blurry.

The stye itself appears as small spot or pimple. The Staphylococcal bacteria causes a pus-filled abscess. Styes usually disappear within a few days. The stye will dissipate and the pimple will disappear, or sometimes the pimple will burst.

There is a simple procedure to help with the reduction of styes. Apply a hot cloth to the stye for around 10 to 15 minutes. By doing this about four times a day, you can ease the discomfort and bring out a head to the stye. Styes are much like pimples in that they can pop when this type of pressure is applied. The pus will drain away and the stye should disappear.

Do not be tempted to pop a stye as you would a pimple. The application of hot compresses is only intended to aid the stye's dissipation. There are also antibiotic creams that can be administered by a doctor. These are useful if styes are a frequent occurrence.

Another eye bump that is commonly mistaken for a stye is a chalazion. This small bump will appear on the eyelid due to blocked oil glands. The chalazion has the same characteristics as the stye, but appears as a hard round pimple on the eyelid. Chalazions can last for a few months, but, like styes, they are harmless.

Styes are normally harmless, but if they are frequent and do not disappear, then an eye doctor should be consulted. The stye may need to be opened and drained. Although not too serious, this procedure should only be performed by a qualified eye doctor.

This info I got from Babycenter.com

How do I treat it?

Most sties will open and drain on their own within a few days, but you may be able to help your baby's sty heal more quickly with a simple home remedy. Just wet a clean washcloth with warm (not hot) water and apply it to your baby's infected eye. Although he'll probably wiggle and resist you, try to hold the compress in place for ten to 15 minutes at a time, and repeat three or four times a day.
The process might go more smoothly if you apply the compress when your baby's asleep or distracted by a feeding. The heat will draw the pus to the front of the sty, making it break open and drain more quickly than it would on its own.

Never squeeze or try to pop a sty. Besides causing pain, it could make the infection worse.
Once the sty drains, wash your baby's eyelid with a clean cloth or cotton ball and some warm water to keep the infected pus from spreading. Any swelling should disappear within a week.

If your baby has an infection in only one eye, don't use the same washcloth to clean both eyes. The bacteria can spread from one eye to the other or to other people's eyes, so don't share a washcloth or towel with your baby, and wash your hands thoroughly after touching his eyes. Also wash your baby's hands.

You don't need to keep your baby home from daycare because of his sty. Just try to give him his treatments before and after daycare hours. Ask the daycare staff to wash your baby's hands throughout the day and to take care not to share his washcloth or towel with another child.

When should I call the doctor?

Have the doctor take a look at the sty if your baby is 3 months old or younger. If your baby is at least 4 months old, call his doctor if the redness and swelling extend to the entire lid or to the opposite lid (top or bottom). These may be signs that your baby is developing periorbital cellulitis. (Sties are one of the most common causes of this more serious infection.)
Also call your doctor if your baby's sty hasn't drained after a week of using warm compresses, or if he has more than one sty at a time or a new one pops up as soon as the first one clears. Your baby's doctor will probably recommend warm compresses, and in most cases this is all that's needed. But she may also prescribe antibiotic ointment to help clear up the infection. In some instances, an oral antibiotic is also prescribed. In the rare case of a severe infection, your child's doctor may refer you to a pediatric ophthalmologist, who can open and drain the sty.

How can I prevent my baby from getting another sty?

Unfortunately, you can't do much to keep him from getting a sty. Children get them more often than adults, and some just seem more prone to them than others.
