Oh No He Didn't.

Friday, April 30, 2010

Could it be? Dad is thinking of going to a nearby resort again this weekend. If this keeps up, I would be super dark by the end of summer. If this pushes thru we can finally try out Imperial. I heard they have the best water slides in Cebu. Hmmm. We'll see.

Anyway...The husband's Facebook status today read, "Have a safe flight baby...I cant wait to hold you in my arms...=)"

My eyes bulged at first because for sure, he was NOT talking about me. I swear my brows were all bunched up all the best anti wrinkle eye cream in the market couldn't have helped. But you know, I didn't get scared or anything , no red flags were waving because I actually knew what he was talking about. His airsoft gun was already shipped and he was too excited to get it. I, on the other hand don't mind if he plays those games with his friends, no harm done - its better than him going out and looking for girls.

Because if that happens, I'd fly there and give him my 2 cents and more.

La Isla Salto

Plans are underway for our annual summer barkada beach outing. We all love the beach and we love to hang out and enjoy each others company. That's why even though we are all very busy we make it a point to get together as much as we can. This year we're going to go Island hopping, la isla salto. We're visiting about 3 islands in Mactan. The plan is to stop by one island and eat lunch there. I just hope they have electric grills or someplace we can grill our food. Anyway, that's the least of our worries though, I know we can manage. I can't wait to finally hit the beach. We've been going to pools and resorts that I really miss swimming in the deep waters of the sea and snorkeling. I am one excited gal.

If you ask me if I have lots of friends or few close friends, I'd answer the latter. I realized, in life where its just short, better make it sweet by choosing your friends wisely. I am lucky to have genuinely good heart-ed and loyal friends.

pink and blue

And...here we go!

1. I was hoping to watch Glee last night but I fell asleep.

2. I was halfway to school then when I realized I left my homework and I left my book on the coffee table - talk about bad day.

3. Why are violets, blue?

4. My husband who works far far away was in my thoughts today.

5. One of my father's favorite sayings was "You will never learn if you don't do it yourself.".

6. "It's like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife". Irony.--I know that feeling!

7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to finally watching Glee!!!, tomorrow my plans include grocery shopping and maybe some bargain hunting and Sunday, I want to have lunch with the family. I want to treat them out because it's my birthday :)) I am turning 27. Who would have guessed, I don't look like a day over 23. LOL (I wish)!

Rain and Heat

Thursday, April 29, 2010

I am glad this day is almost over.

Ironic is how I kind of describe it because of the heat and rain. Confused? Let me expound. I woke up around 430AM. Yes 430AM, I woke up even earlier than the roosters because the rain was pouring really hard. At first, I was thankful for the rain - a welcome change from the heat of summer - but then because of the noise, the kids woke up. So we started our day at 5AM. No amount of creams can help my dark eye circles now. An hour later, the rain stopped and the sun shone brightly for the day after all. Later in the morning the electricity and water went out! It was super duper hot. My headache was kicking in and all I wanted to do was sleep but I can't because of the heat. I also wanted to take a bath - but yes, your right, I can't! :(

The water and electricity was restored by noon though. *Happiness* And now, here I am almost done with work for the day.

Tomorrow should be a better day. It's one long weekend again. Woohoo!

Balding?

I am itching to have my hair makeover already. I always have a new look when its my birthday. This year though, I'd postpone it a bit because there's a lot of summer activities which will surely damage my hair if I have it colored. The reason why I need the hair-makeover this year is because of my excessive hair loss. That's precisely the reason why I wear my hair "curly" lately. I set it hours before and put curlers so that the curls can add volume to my otherwise blah and thinning hair. My mom's friend suggested I try some hair loss treatment for women; I was apprehensive at first thinking it might be too expensive. I will still check it out though, I don't want to become bald before I turn 27 *gasp*.

That's me. I didn't take the picture, obviously. It was my cousin who did. I don't even remember her taking this picture. That means that's a totally candid shot and if you know me personally you'd know that its hard to take something candid of me. I am always ready for the camera =)

This week's challenge:

Manic Monday #209

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

If you could write your own bill of rights, what would you include?
I'd add Section 23: The right of the people (men, women, gays and handicapped) to equal opportunities in the work place, school and in any given situation.

What is going on in the world today that affects you the most?
...I guess right now it would be climate change. The weather has been extreme. Although Cebu has been sparred from any major tragedy, I still really feel for all the people suffering from various disasters like tsunami's and earthquakes.

What do you think is the secret to a good life?
The secret is to live happily with what you have. If you keep comparing you life with others you will never ever be satisfied. Count your own blessings; if you are busy looking at others' blessings, you'd miss seeing the one's you're getting.

Blue Fly

When you look into my closet, you would notice that most of my things are either dresses, skirts or shorts. I seldom wear jeans because I find them heavy and uncomfortable. I only have a few jeans in my closet - 3 to be perfectly exact. I gave away most of them because I never wear them anyway besides they are outdated. However, 3 pairs is just not enough, I plan to buy a new pair, like this Hudson jeans from bluefly.com. I always hear about Bluefly because of Project Runway so I decided to really check their stuff out. I love this skinny jeans (you can save 40%), a pair which is dark blue and has a zip ankle. The zip ankle is good since you don't have to jump around and tug your skinny jeans to put it on.

Only Exception

Today, I woke up with the smell of rain. With the temperature reaching to 33 degrees Celsius lately, the rain is a welcome change. I am not a fan of rain because I hate getting wet or the streets getting muddy, but today is an exception. I welcome it, in fact I am utterly grateful for it. The plants seem to be happy as well.

The rain only lasted for about 2 hours. Only enough to water the plants and cool the temperature a bit. But we are still better off than others.

=====

I came in early to work with optimism and great energy. I started looking for jobs in Stavanger, Norway - jobs that I am qualified like something to do with Admin work. Sad to say, there aren't enough opportunities right now for my field. However, there were a lot of openings in the medical field for nurses and nursing aids. Maybe now is time to medical assistant training school? I dunno. Medical field is so not for me. I did however share the link with my nursing friends who are in-between jobs right now. They seemed interested.

This is good. If they decide to work in Norway then I won't be feeling home sick so much.

Trigger Happy

Monday, April 26, 2010

I have mentioned a few posts back how I am still in 'auto' mode when using my SLR. Although, admittedly so, the D90 is very user friendly but I still get daunted by the idea of switching to Manual mode. After some readings (in DPS) I have learned a few tips and tricks, for example, I can chose the P-mode, it is still in full-automatic mode but I can make minor changes in the settings.

I read this article from Darren Rowse of DPS and I can't help but share it here. I find it very helpful especially for beginners like me.

Priority Modes

Aperture and Shutter Priority modes are really semi-manual (or semi-automatic) modes. They give you some control over your settings but also ensure you have a well exposed image by the camera making some of the decisions on settings. Let me explain each separately:

Aperture Priority Mode

(often it has a symbol of ‘A’ or Av’ to indicate it’s selected)

In this mode you as the photographer sets the aperture that you wish to use and the camera makes a decision about what shutter speed is appropriate in the conditions that you’re shooting in.

Dof

When would you use Aperture Priority Mode? – if you remember our tutorial on aperture you’ll see how the main impact that aperture had on images was with regards to Depth of Field (DOF). As a result most people use Aperture Priority Mode when they are attempting to have some control in this area. If they want a shallow DOF (for example in the shot to the right which has the flower in focus but the background nice and blurred) they’ll select a large aperture (for example f/1.4 – as in the example to the right) and let the camera choose an appropriate shutter speed. If they wanted an image with everything in focus they’d pick a smaller aperture (for example f/22) and let the camera choose an appropriate shutter speed (generally a longer one).

When choosing an Aperture keep in mind that the camera will be choosing faster or longer shutter speeds and that there comes a point where shutter speeds get too long to continue to hand hold your camera (usually around 1/60). Once you get much slower than this level you’ll need to consider using a tripod. Also if you’re photographing a moving subject your shutter speed will impact how it’s captured and a slow shutter speed will mean your subject will be blurred).

Shutter Priority Mode

(often has a symbol of Tv or S)

In this mode you as the photographer choose the shutter speed that you wish to shoot at and let the camera make a decision about what aperture to select to give a well exposed shot.

When would you use Shutter Priority Mode? – in our tutorial on shutter speed we talked about how the main impact of different shutter speeds was how ‘movement’ would be captured in your images. As a result most people switch to shutter priority mode when they want more control over how to photograph a moving subject.

For example if they want to photograph a racing car but want to completely freeze it so there is no motion blur they’d choose a fast shutter speed (say at 1/2000 like in the first shot below) and the camera would take into consideration how much light there was available and set an appropriate aperture. If instead you wanted to photograph the car but have some motion blur to illustrate how fast the car is moving you might like to choose a slower shutter speed (like the second shot below which has a shutter speed of 1/125) and the camera would choose a smaller aperture as a result.

1:2000-1
1:125-1

Keep in mind that as the camera chooses different apertures it will impact the Depth of Field in your image. This means if you choose a fast shutter speed to freeze your fast moving object that it’ll have a narrower DOF.

Practice

As you can see – Shutter and Aperture Priority modes do give you more control over your images but they do take a little practice to get used to.

As you use them you need to not only think about the setting that YOU set but also keep an eye on the setting that the camera selects for you.

I find that when shooting in Av or Tv modes that it’s often best to bracket your shots and shoot a number of images of the same subject (where you have time) at different settings. This will ensure that you’re likely to get at least one shot which meets your need.

The best way to learn about Shutter priority and Aperture Priority modes is to grab your camera, to head out with it and to experiment. Switch to Av or Tv and start playing with the different settings (taking lots of shots as you go). Particularly watch how the camera makes changes to compensate for your selections and what impact it has upon the shots that you take.

In Aperture Priority Mode take some shots at the largest aperture you can (small numbers) and see how it blurs the background (but also increases the shutter speed) and then head to the other end of the spectrum to take some shots at the smallest aperture you can (large numbers) to see how it keeps more of your image in focus.

In Shutter Priority Mode play with fast and slow shutter speeds and see how that impacts DOF.

Don’t be frustrated if your initial shots are not what you’d expect – it takes practice to get your head around these modes. But keep in mind that when you do master them you’ll have a lot more creative control over your shots. It’s really worth learning this.

Fun Under Cebu's Sun

I can't help but talk more about our day of fun under the sun.

That's the greatest thing about living in Cebu for someone like me who loves the beach. In less than an hour, we can frolic in the white sandy beaches and resorts of Mactan. Too bad we didn't get to ride the banana boat, that would have been so great! The resort had other amenities (I wonder if atv riding is included?) but we just helped ourselves with the resorts other amenities like the jacuzzi. The food was also great. It was a buffet, perfect because we were starving from all the swimming. At 600/pax it was already a good deal.

Baby's Day Out

Finally, after weeks of talking about it, my wish finally came true. We went to the nearby resort last Saturday and we (the kids and I) has so much fun under the sun. Although we mostly used the pool instead of the beach it was still such a fun weekend and because of that I am feeling really lazy to work today. My head is still in "beach mode" right now and I can't think straight. I am too lazy to update my blog, but I have to.

So, let's talk about better things than work shall we? Baby Jacob is already a very good crawler. He has no problems going around and getting the things he fancies. That being said, you have to be extra vigilant because he puts everything in his mouth. He can also sit up straight without any support. Also, another milestone for him in his 7th month is the fact that he can pull himself up already! This would mean that in a few months he will be learning to walk already. He also enjoys his baby foods. He doesn't like Cerelac very much, he prefers Gerber or the new Full Circle organic baby food, he didn't seem to mind that it was Broccoli and Squash flavored. He is also mixed fed with formula and it wasn't as hard to let him drink the milk. I told the Nanny to stick with the schedule and number of feedings, I don't want him to be getting too big. It's all cute right now, but when he grows up he might need the aid of the best weight loss supplement in the market and he won't be thanking me for that.

Also, Baby JV is proving to be such a water baby. He loves his daily bath, almost instantly after I take him out he would cry in protest. When we went to the pool last Saturday, he didn't like to stop! He was kicking his legs and flapping his arms enjoying the cool water during that hot day.

How about you? Did you enjoy your weekend?

Close Your Eyes And Leap.

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

I can't wait to download and watch Glee tonight. Hot off the grill. They say its the famous Madonna episode tonight. Win!

If you haven't heard about Glee by now then jump into the bandwagon and find out exactly why everyone keeps on talking about it. I love that its a fresh kind of series which is hilarious and very entertaining to all types of audience. It is something your kids and even your mother can enjoy. The dialog (especially those by Sue Sylvester) is funny and their song and dance numbers are the very reason this show is #1.

I first heard of the song, Defying Gravity in the show's 'Wheels' Episode. I am in love with the song.

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by the rules
Of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes and leap!

It's time to try
Defying gravity
I think I'll try
Defying gravity
Kiss me goodbye
I am defying gravity
And you wont bring me down!

I'm through accepting limits
''cause someone says they're so
Some things I cannot change
But till I try, I'll never know!
Too long I've been afraid of
Losing love I guess I've lost
Well, if that's love
It comes at much too high a cost!

Anyway, I just need to read about nuphedragen reviews and then I am off from work. Today is a semi-toxic day at work and I am quite thankful. I was able to read more about Norway's Family Reunification VISA and its requirements. This time, I am closing my eyes and leaping to the possibility of relocating my family there. Sure, its scary but I am breaking out from my comfort zone and leaping to a brighter future, not only for me but for my family.

My weakness is that I am easily addicted to things, I hate to lose and then I quickly lose interest in a few months or so. That is why I should not play casino games casinoscandinavia. But here I am checking out what they have. Not for me actually but for a friend who says he has nothing else better to do with his time. I hope he wins though. Good luck with finding the right online game for you.

Auto-Mode.

I've been slacking from work again. I hate doing employees salaries so instead of that I am on Facebook (such a big distraction) and I am reading about Photography tips and tricks. I am learning so much already and it is very fun. At first I was a bit apprehensive about starting to learn about photography. I looked awkward with my D90. It felt like I wasn't worthy of the camera. I didn't know how to operate settings so I am always in auto-mode.

If you are reading this Chi, lame, I know. :P Give me time and I'd rock this DSLR thing. Got this from digital-photography-school.com. 5 Mind-Traps of Beginner Photographers by Laura Radniecki.

Here are 5 mind-traps common to beginning photographers, and why you shouldn’t let yourself buy into them.

1. My Photos Are Bad: It’s easy to feel like your photos are junk. Everyone starts at the beginning; not knowing a thing. Learning about your camera can be a bumpy road, and there will be lots of bad photos for every good one you take. That’s the nature of learning. Each time you take a photo though, you’ll get a little bit better. Don’t fall into the trap of feeling like you should be taking perfect pictures right away.

2. My Gear Isn’t Good Enough: Expensive gear doesn’t necessarily equal good photos. If you don’t know how to use a camera to its full potential, the most expensive gear in the world won’t give you great photos. That said, fantastic photos can come from all ranges of equipment. I started my photography journey when I was in grade school, with several small film Point & Shoot cameras. I upgraded to the digital world with another round of Point & Shoots. I took some photos that I’m really proud of with those Point & Shoot cameras, set on Auto mode. Sure, I have taken better ones with my DSLR, mostly because my knowledge of photography grew and I learned what my camera is truly capable of. But that doesn’t change the fact that I love some of the photos that came from my Point & Shoot camera.

3. I’m Doing This All Wrong: There is no “wrong” way to take a photo. Many beginners feel like they are inadequate because they don’t understand manual settings, and can’t effectively use them. Don’t fall into that mind-trap! Auto isn’t a bad setting. It is a great place to begin your photography journey. The Priority modes on DSLRs are designed to offer a transition from Auto to full Manual settings, when YOU are ready. Advance at your own speed. Remember, great photos are what count. The settings you used to capture the great photos aren’t important. *Don’t let the fear of progressing past Auto hold you back, though. It’s a scary world at first, but there is no reason not to take the leap. In the digital world, there’s no consequence for taking hundreds of photos, even if most turn out horrible. Who cares? That’s what the DELETE button is for! Once you’ve mastered Auto mode, practice using the other settings. Research how they work and what they do. Play around with them. They are conquerable and you WILL succeed. It’s all about learning and practice.

4. I’ll Never Be Able to Take Photos Like the Pros
Remember – the pros were beginners once too! Everyone has to start somewhere. Learn from the pros. Study their work. Use them as inspiration to practice and grow.

5. I Can’t Afford Any Editing Programs:
Photoshop might not be in your arsenal right now, and maybe it never will be. Have no fear! There are plenty of other choices out there, many of which are free. Creative control over your photos is at your fingertips!

Check out these free options:

* Windows Photo Gallery

* iPhoto

* Picasa

* Picnik

If you’d like more editing capabilities but still don’t want to invest in the full Photoshop suite, Photoshop Elements is a great alternative. PSE has most of the best features of Photoshop, for a fraction of the cost, and in a slightly less intimidating form. Adobe also has the Lightroom software; an organizational and complete editing package, for less than the Photoshop bundle.
It’s easy to let these mind-traps seep into your consciousness and get you down. They might even make you second guess your photographic talent. Don’t let them! Don’t give up. Keep shooting and watch yourself and your photography grow.

Game On.

When I was a kid, I loved playing games. Since its summertime now, many of the students are bummed at home with nothing else to do. One of the best ways to kill time this summer is to play games. When I was younger games would mean going out to the streets and playing games like hopscotch and hide and seek. Nowadays, I rarely see kids go out of the house. That is because computer games rule their lives now unlike my time. Playing online games is fine as long as they don't include online casino games at casinoscandinavia. Casino games like these are for adults who knows boundaries and limitations. I know DH plays online casino games like poker. I, on the other hand will stick to outdoor games. I am a bad card player and I hate to lose!

I'm Not An Old Lady

It is quiet around the house lately. Everybody seems to be traveling except me. Right now, Mom is away for her Divine Mercy convention. Dad is going out of town too for work. My brother will probably be sent back to our Bacolod office for inventory, my sister is not here and yeah, Hubby too.

That leaves me in-charge of the whole household.

I don't mind though. It's funny, I was walking around the house with my nightgown and curlers and I had to go out to the garage a bit when our next door neighbor, a little girl, asked me what I placed in my hair. I told her it was curlers and that I wanted to curl my hair so that I look pretty. She said, I don't need it anymore because I am already pretty! Kids, I love 'em their so honest. ^_^ I am sure she just said that because I looked like an old woman. Speaking of old, I just found out on top of wrinkles, I have age spots in my face already! They are around my eye area...:(( It doesn't help when Ozzy sometimes teases me and says, "You're an old lady Mama." I really have to take much better care of my skin from now on. I am not getting younger and the sun is brutal. I guess putting on toner and moisturizer is not enough. A good sunblock is a must this summer.

Key To A Standout Resume

I've never ever gone job hunting before. I have not submitted my resume to any prospective employer - so I really wouldn't know what to expect from them.

I found this article in Yahoo and thought it very helpful.

Here are ten of the deadliest resume phrases in use ("massive overuse" would be more accurate) and replacements for each one. You'll rewrite the replacement phrases to reflect your own accomplishments--and that's the key! We can't expect a timeworn piece of resume boilerplate to stand in for our own pithy, personal examples.

Kill this: Results-oriented professional

Replace with your own version of this: I love to solve thorny supply-chain problems

Kill this: Excellent team player

Replace with your own version of this: At Acme Dynamite, I partnered with Engineering to cut our product cost in half

Kill this: Bottom-line orientation

Replace with your own version of this: My accounting-process overhaul saved the company $10M in its first year

Kill this: Superior communication skills

Replace with your own version of this: I led a two-day offsite that yielded our 2010 product lineup and a $40K cost savings

Kill this: Possess organizational skills

Replace with your own version of this: Reduced customer-complaint resolution time from three weeks to one by revamping the process

Kill this: Savvy business professional

Replace with your own version of this: I'm a PR manager who's gotten his employers covered by Yahoo! and Time magazine

Kill this:
Strong work ethic

Replace with your own version of this: I taught myself HTML over a weekend in order to grab a marketing opportunity

Kill this: Meets or exceeds expectations

Replace with your own version of this: Invited to join our executive staff at a strategy summit during my first year at the company

Kill this:
Strong presentation skills

Replace with your own version of this: Was recruited to join Acme Dynamite after my boss heard me speak at a conference

Kill this: Seeking a challenging opportunity

Replace with your own version of this: I'm looking for a midsize manufacturer primed to grow its business in the Pacific Rim

Get the boilerplate lead out of your resume today, and replace it with concrete, visual stories that bring your power to life. Watch employers respond! You can't afford to send out another lifeless, sounds-like-everyone-else resume. Employers want the real you on the page. Try it!

When Paper Fails

Monday, April 19, 2010

I've been itching to shop online for a few months now. Since my birthday is coming up, I was thinking of "rewarding" myself once again with a nice bag. But you know what, the mommy in me trumps the fashionista in me as always. My 1st borns' is entering preschool in a few weeks and I will use my Paypal money for his tuition. The reason I lingered withdrawing my dollar to my peso account is that the current exchange rate is very low. That is good news to those who buys dollars like my dad who imports from the US. As for me who relies from my extra income in dollar, I am not too happy exchanging my $ to Php just yet. It's comforting to know that even though it is not that big, we have a few money saved up for the rainy days. Actually, if you think about it now is the time to buy gold bullions. Why? Because in this time where tsunami's and earthquakes are rampant; what else can we do so as to keep something of value? Yes, real estate is a good investment but imagine a chaotic world, something like 2012 where your house has burned down and you are running for your life to the arc, gold, unlike paper money has proved to be a successful method of preserving its value when national currency fails. Just think about it.

Hot.Humid.Heat

Monday, April 12, 2010

Our office air-conditioner chose the worst time to conk out. It's 33 degrees Celsius hot today and I can feel the heat burning my skin. The fan is directly facing me but its only helping a bit. I have a headache and to top is off; I can't get have so many reports to finish before end of day. SSS (Social Security System) us not helping at all.
